Pension record

Follow your earnings-related pension accrual in your pension record. You can see which employment relationships, self-employment activities and benefits have accrued pension, and how much. By reviewing your pension record regularly, you can ensure that your pension information is up to date.

Who receives a pension record?

You will receive a pension record if you live in Finland and are

  • an employee who has reached the age of 17 or
  • a self-employed person who has reached the age of 18.

You can find your pension record from Varma Online Service if your most recent employment was insured with us. If you are already a pensioner, you can see your earnings information on the Pension record page starting from the year in which your pension began, for a maximum of the six previous years.

Your pension record states the amount of your pension

The pension record contains up-to-date information on your accrued pension and an estimate of your future pension. In Varma Online Service, you can also view a calculated estimate that provides a breakdown of employment relationships in the private and public sectors, periods of self-employment and benefits that accrue pension.

The pension record shows the pensions accrued according to Finnish employment pension laws. The record does not contain information about work carried out abroad for a foreign employer, any reduced retirement age or voluntary supplementary pensions.

In Varma Online Service, you can see your earnings-related pension information more extensively than on a paper record

How to check your pension record

The pension record shows your entire work history. Review the instructions if you want to check your information and identify any missing or incorrect details.

Paid work has accrued pension

  • since 2017 for those aged 17 years and over
  • in 2005-2016, for those aged 18 or over
  • before 2005, for those aged 23 or over.

The changes to the age limits have not come into force retroactively.
If you are self-employed, you can take out YEL insurance at the earliest when you are 18 years old. Pension accrues on the basis of your confirmed YEL income from the same age.

Since 2019, employers have always reported earnings data to the Incomes Register when paying wages. The income data with impacts on pension is transferred from the Incomes Register to the pension record on the 8th day of the following month.

If you notice an error in the information, please contact your employer in the first instance. The employer corrects the information in the Incomes Register. If your employer has gone out of business or has been declared bankrupt, you can submit an enquiry through Varma Online Service.

If you notice any missing information in your earnings data prior to 2019, you can rectify the information as follows:

  • log in to Varma Online Service and submit an enquiry or
  • report any errors in public sector earnings information to Keva.

If the gaps concern data older than 6 years, also attach evidence of the missing data to the enquiry, such as

  • employment certificate
  • salary certificate
  • tax information showing the amount of wages paid.

We will need the attachments in order to verify the information and process your enquiry.

If your pension record has LEL and/or TaEL employment relationships, the record shows

  • the year of work
  • the amount of earnings
  • the pension accrued from them.

The start and end dates or the employer’s name are not displayed.

Employees of private employers in employment relationships in the agricultural, forestry, construction or ports sectors were insured under LEL between 1962 and 2007.

In 1986-2007, insurance under TaEL was provided for musicians, directors, journalists, translators and other employees in the creative industry. Between 1998 and 2007, the act also covered short-term employment relationships in the private sector outside the industries covered by LEL.

Pension was not accrued if the annual income fell below the statutory limit.

The name of your employer may have changed during or after your employment. The pension record shows the employer’s latest name for the entire employment relationship.

This does not affect the amount of your pension or the reported earnings.

If you are self-employed, pension accrues on the basis of your confirmed YEL income. The pension accrues according to the same rules as for employees. If you review the pension record in the middle of the year, this year’s confirmed income is not yet shown on an annual basis.

Your confirmed YEL income is adjusted annually using a wage coefficient. If you do not change your confirmed income, the amount of your accrued pension will remain the same. You can adjust your YEL earned income in Varma Online Service at any time if it does not correspond to the value of your work contribution.

You accrue pension for unpaid periods for which an earnings-based benefit is paid. Pension also accrues on periods spent caring for a child under the age of 3 at home, and on studies leading to a qualification or degree.

You will be able to see the pension accrual in your pension record at the latest in spring of the year after the benefit was received. The payers of benefits for unpaid periods, such as Kela and unemployment funds, report the previous year’s data to the Incomes Register by 31 March. As a result, the pension record might not include the amount of accrued pension and information on benefits before that date.

Information about your degree and the pension accrued from it is usually visible in the spring of the year following graduation, mainly by the end of May.

If you notice errors or missing information in benefits you have received before 2019, send us an enquiry.

In addition to pension accrual, the pension record also usually shows an estimate of your future pension. The estimate is based on the average of your most recent earnings data. It takes into account the effect of the life expectancy coefficient and any increment for deferred retirement.

If you have not yet applied for pension, you can calculate pension estimates for different points of time on the Pension estimates page in Varma Online Service. You can also adjust the earnings data used in the estimates.

When can work in the public sector reduce pension?

If you have worked in the public sector before 2005, your pension may be affected by public sector reduction.

The reduction may apply to you if:

  • you were born before 1960
  • your public-sector employment began before 1993
  • you are retiring on an old-age pension before the age of 65 and
  • your public-sector employment ended before then.

Further information about the public-sector reduction is available at Keva
