Price of YEL insurance

The price of YEL insurance depends on your YEL income. If you are a newly self-employed person, you receive a 22 per cent discount on your YEL contributions for the first four years. Your YEL contributions are also fully tax-deductible.

How much does YEL insurance cost?

The price of YEL insurance is calculated as a percentage of your YEL income. In 2026, the YEL contribution rate is 24.40 per cent.

The contribution rates are confirmed annually by the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

The amount you pay is also affected by your chosen instalment months and the number of instalments. The most cost-effective option is to pay your annual YEL contribution in a single instalment in January.

Discount for the newly self-employed

When you take out YEL insurance for the first time, you get a 22 per cent discount on your contributions for four years (48 months). You can use the discount period in up to two separate parts.

For example, if you take out YEL insurance and it remains in force for 10 months, you will still have 38 months of the discount left. You can use the remaining discount period if you take out YEL insurance again in the future.

YEL contributions are tax-deductible

YEL contributions are fully tax-deductible.

  • If you pay the YEL contributions yourself, you can deduct them in your personal taxation.
  • If your company pays the YEL contributions, they can be deducted in the company’s taxation.

We report the YEL incomes of insured entrepreneurs to the Tax Administration each year. However, we do not report YEL contributions. If you need information about your contributions for your tax return, you can easily find them in Varma Online Service.

When are YEL contributions due?

YEL contributions are due on the 20th day of the month. You can choose to pay your YEL contributions in 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 or 12 instalments per year.

Your chosen instalment months and the number of instalments affect the amount of your contribution.

  • If you pay earlier in the year, the contribution will be credited with interest.
  • If you pay later in the year, the contribution will be debited with interest.

The most cost-effective option is to pay your YEL contribution in a single instalment in January. You can change the instalments easily in Varma Online Service.

Flexible YEL contributions

You can adjust your YEL contributions according to your financial situation. During financially stronger periods, you can improve your pension coverage by making additional contributions of 10–100 per cent. If needed, you can also temporarily reduce your contributions by 10–20 per cent.

If your financial situation allows, you can voluntarily pay additional YEL contributions.

  • Additional contributions can be 10–100 per cent of your regular contribution.
  • You will receive a separate invoice for the additional contribution, which must be paid during the same calendar year.
  • Your total annual contributions cannot exceed the YEL contribution calculated using the maximum YEL income limit (EUR 214,000 in 2026).

You can make additional contributions every year if you wish. As with all YEL contributions, they are tax-deductible.

You can temporarily reduce your YEL contributions. Please note that a lower contribution means less pension accrual for that year.

  • You can reduce your contribution by 10–20 per cent.
  • Your total annual contributions cannot be lower than the YEL contribution calculated using the minimum YEL income limit (EUR 9,423.09 in 2026).

You can reduce your contributions for no more than three years during any seven consecutive-year period.

You can apply easily through Varma Online Service by sending us a message.

Please tell us:

  • whether you want to increase or reduce your contribution
  • how much you would like to increase or reduce it (either as a percentage or in euros).

Apply well in advance so that we have time to process your request and, if applicable, ensure that you pay any additional contribution during the same year.

Flexibility applies to one calendar year at a time, and you can use it only once per year.

You can use contribution flexibility if

  • your insurance is valid for the entire calendar year
  • your insurance remains with the same pension insurance company throughout the year
  • you have no overdue unpaid YEL contributions
  • you are not receiving the discount for the newly self-employed
  • you are not receiving a Finnish earnings-related pension.

Contribution flexibility may need to be cancelled if your circumstances change during the year. This may happen, for example, if your YEL income is changed or your insurance ends before the end of the year.

In such cases, your YEL contributions will be recalculated based on your confirmed YEL income.

Flexible YEL contributions only affect your pension. They do not affect social security benefits such as sickness allowance or unemployment benefits.

Changing your YEL income affects both your pension and your social security benefits. If there are significant and lasting changes in your self-employed activity, you should apply for a change to your YEL income instead of using contribution flexibility.

When your YEL income accurately reflects the value of your work and the circumstances of your business, your social security coverage will also be at the right level.
